ARTIST STATEMENT

I strive in my work to ignite the imagination of the viewers and bring them into a beautiful world I create. Using mainly sculpture, I attempt to capture moments within a story, like a 3 dimensional photo, within a fantastical or futuristic setting. I often work in the genres of science fiction or fantasy, especially within old mythology and fairy tales to depict stories of my own. As both a writer and an artist, I occasionally tie the two together to create scenes from my own short stories.

Throughout the course of my work, I determine the direction it goes through experimentation, feeling my way through it. Themes often follow those of classical fairy tales and sometimes environmentalist themes, exploring courage, and stepping past previous boundaries with unintended consequences. I also keep it realistic in style to bring people into the scene as much as possible.

I start with an initial plan and, based on structural integrity along the way, I adapt the original designs as needed. I change materials from time to time based on the weight of the object I need to create and if the materials that will work with the structure of the sculpture.

I have expanded my work in size over the past year. It has been a time of reflection and experimentation, realizing I work best with my hands, when I can feel my materials and sculpt them to my will. Working so large has stretched me to consider the engineering part of art. Some of my earlier works had some technical difficulties. Yet I enjoy the challenge and hope to keep creating ambitious projects to add more beauty in the world. Bringing pieces of stories into reality in order to strike awe into the viewers will hopefully inspire people to create their own work.
