snorkeling by Hsu Tang Han

There wasn't a lot about Hsu Tang Han online but what I could determine was that he graduated with an anthropology degree from National Taiwan university in 1985. He worked on woodcarving as a night job and studied it for three and a half years before his first show in 1991 in Taipei. His carvings started off focusing on culture and people of the Qing dynasty. He did not start doing pixelated sculptures like the one above until 2010. He has displayed work in Japan, Australia, New York, Vancouver, Seoul, Los Angelus, Spain, and Paris.

Each work takes him three to four months to complete it and he often goes through several revisions in order to come out with a finished work. He usually uses walnut, tweak, soft western red-cedar, Laotian fir, or African woodwork.

The interesting thing about Hsu Tang Han is that he continually uses classic techniques and incorporates modern symbolism. The pixelated wood sculpture is like nothing I have ver seen and takes a lot of forethought to make it look so accurate.
